Matjaž Stibilj

Even as a toddler, Matjaž was a bit of a peculiar soul, showing an early fascination with books. He was particularly captivated by the structure of literary works, spending his initial years engaging in the unconventional hobby of ‘reverse bookbinding’ and exploring various literary ‘flavours’. After a thorough analysis, he concluded that books taste best with strawberry jam. Following his expulsion from kindergarten—due to his unrestrained vocal pollution of the environment with cries for his mommy—he somewhat navigated through the problematic era of elementary school, the turbulent times of high school, and the complex years of university.

By 2005, as a university-educated historian and sociologist of culture, Matjaž quickly but softly landed between the shelves of the Public Library Karl Lavrič in Ajdovščina. There, he served time in the information and circulation department, acted as a system administrator, implemented RFID technology, managed and occasionally drove the mobile library and youngsters to despair with storytelling. His creative output included crafting more or less non-fictional statistics, co-developing the library and literary portal websites, curating thematic exhibitions, changing lightbulbs and dabbling in various other projects. In 2020, he transitioned to the library in Krško, where he was involved in launching the new Posavje Mobile Library service and then participated in the process of building an equipping the new central library, in doing so, he also learned the high art of avoiding or shifting responsibility from one contractor to a fifth contractor.

Since 2021, he has been heading the Section for Mobile Libraries at the Slovenian Library Association, participating in various working groups within the Slovenian Public Libraries Association, and leading the public libraries working group for the national library information system, COBISS.

Despite his many accomplishments, Matjaž has never managed to fulfil his grandmother’s wish for him to have a ‘normal job’ and become a car mechanic.
