Tomislav Stipančić

I’m Tomislav Stipančić and I’m kind of versatile when it comes to robotics and artificial intelligence. Most of the time, I’m in my LAPIS lab at the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering and Naval Architecture, University of Zagreb, where I work with colleagues and students on super cool things.

My research ambitions? Everything about artificial intelligence (AI), cognitive informatics, robots with feelings (yes, you saw that right), studying the relationship between humans and robots, and diving into the world of augmented reality (XR). I’m totally into computer networks, the wonders of the web and e-learning because I find it fun.

I was given a great opportunity to spend 8 months as a postdoctoral fellow at Kyoto University in Japan in 2016, which I took advantage of. There I worked on a project to develop an affective robot. Also, I was a visiting researcher at places like KTH Stockholm and URJC Madrid.

The highlight of my career? Although I’m not there yet, for now I’d single out the creation of an affective robot and virtual being called PLEA, which “DailyArts” magazine placed among the most interesting AI-based installations to visit in 2021 in the UK. Pretty cool, right?

But life is not only about robots and research. When I’m not in the lab or the lecture hall, I’m probably cooking something fancy (I can say I have some crazy cooking skills), running (it keeps my heart healthy), or programming for fun (yeah, more geeky stuff). Most importantly, though, I’m a father to amazing daughters who keep me up-to-date with TikTok and stuff. It’s never boring with them. Very often I am their assistant in various adventures.
